Chandelier Size Calculator
Written by Rick Kovac, COO of Golden Lighting
The takeaway: Enter your room, ceiling and table, and this calculator applies the Golden Scale Method. You get a chandelier diameter, a fixture height and a hanging height in one step.
Enter your room length and width to see your size.
How the calculator works
It runs the three checks from The Golden Scale Method:
- Room formula: room length + width in feet = the fixture's minimum diameter in inches.
- Table ratio: over a rectangular table, the fixture spans 1/2 to 2/3 of the table's width, with its edge about 6 in inside the table edge. When the room and the table disagree, the table wins.
- Scale check: airy designs can size up a step; dense or ornate ones should size down a step.
Then it adds height. The fixture should be 2.5 to 3 in tall per foot of ceiling. Hang it 30 to 36 in above the table, or at least 7 ft above the floor where people walk.

Every number here comes from Golden Lighting's design rulebook. The rulebook is built on published lighting standards, including the IES/ALA recommended practice for residential lighting (ANSI/IES RP-11-26) and the National Electrical Code, plus the judgment of professional lighting designers.
