Semi-Flush
A Few Inches of Drop, a Lot of Presence
Semi-flush mounts sit a step below the ceiling — enough to catch light and cast dimension like a small chandelier, never low enough to crowd the room. They're the answer for 8-foot ceilings that deserve better than a bare dome.
Getting it right
- Scale: figure roughly 2.5 to 3 inches of fixture height per foot of ceiling height — an 8-foot ceiling suits fixtures around 20 to 24 inches tall.
- Over a table: a wide semi-flush (24 inches or more across, with five or six lamps) can anchor a dining table where a hanging fixture can't clear.
- Families to know: Jules, Finley, Axel, Duncan, and Smyth cover antique ivory, vintage sage, champagne brass, rubbed bronze, and matte black.
Designer tip: long, narrow rooms do better with two or three matched semi-flush fixtures spaced along the centerline than one large fixture in the middle.
